Planning an engagement session is an exciting step in your wedding journey, and Michigan offers a treasure trove of breathtaking backdrops perfect for capturing your love story. From serene natural landscapes to charming urban settings, the Wolverine State has it all. Here are ten of my favorite locations to inspire your location search - each one is packed with beauty, character, and a little Michigan magic. Just imagine you and your partner in these dreamy spots!

Number One: Kensington Metropark in Milford, Michigan
Kensington Park is one of my favorite locations because it truly has SO much to offer and the park is HUGE. During the session pictured we drove throughout the park during their two hour session and stopped several times.
From marshy areas to woods, fields, a beach, and more - you literally cannot go wrong if you choose Kensington Metropark for your engagement session.
It costs $10 to enter the park, so make sure you bring cash! You could truly spend a whole day here and it's beautiful in any season!

Number Two: Granger Meadows Park in Lansing, Michigan
Granger Meadows Park is another one of my favorites! I do tons of mini sessions and engagement sessions here because it's almost like a secret gem.
I didn't even know this park existed until I moved into the Northern part of Lansing and it very quickly became one of my go-tos. The park has tons of cute spots from fields, to large hills, occasional flowers, and a cute little pond - it's perfect.
Additionally, it's not usually very busy and it's free to get into! I recommend this location for Spring, Summer, and Fall. They usually have the nicer areas closed during the winter months.

Number Three: Cranbrook House and Gardens in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
Cranbrook House and Gardens is easily in my top five for favorite locations! The grounds are MASSIVE and have so much to offer. They have huge reflection pools, stunning gardens, beautiful houses, and MORE! Honestly, no matter where you go here on the grounds for photos - it just gets better with every spot you move to.
However, there is a downside to this location. It costs $350 for a two hour time slot to take photos here. While it is a steep price - it's definitely worth it in the long run if you want a location that's extremely unique and gives that formal flare. Additionally, it's beautiful year round, but if you want the reflection pools to be full during your session - definitely visit during the on-season and NOT the off-season.

Number Four: Clinton Lakes County Park in St. Johns, Michigan
Clinton Lakes is perfect for those that are located more inland (towards the Lansing area) that want a beachy vibe for their photos without traveling two hours to the coast.
Getting into Clinton Lakes is free and it offers stunning sunsets during the summer months. However, I do not recommend this location unless you'll be doing your session during golden hour, sunset, or blue hour. There is absolutely NO shade cover so the lighting will be very direct and harsh otherwise - it also tends to be very busy during the summer months.

Number Five: Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Mears, Michigan
I'm a little biased towards Silver Lake because I spent every summer there as a kid - but it truly is one of the most stunning locations in Michigan. Obviously, it's exactly as it sounds - it is miles and miles of sand. However, the views (and the walk that will make you question all of your life decisions) are SO worth it.
There is a pedestrian parking lot available for those that wish to walk into the dunes vs drive in and ORV. A state park pass is required for you to park, but if you don't have one on your plate already you can purchase one upon arrival for $30.
Bonus: If you want two locations that are similar, but don't want to hike five miles on foot to the beach you can visit the Dunes and Little Sable Point Lighthouse - this gives you open sand at one location and a perfect beach/water spot for the second. Additionally, if you want something unique you can always visit Whippy Dip for ice cream engagement photos or hit up the arcade in town for something extra fun.

Number Six: Michigan State Capitol in Lansing, Michigan
If you want formal engagement pictures or even a cute picnic date with a pretty backdrop - you cannot go wrong with the Capitol Building in Lansing. From the stunning architecture to the grounds (that are always perfect) it's a great spot for intimate pictures that scream "classy."
If you plan to visit on a weekday before 6:00pm, be prepared to pay for parking (and definitely do because they will leave a ticket on your car if you don't). If you visit after 6:00pm or on the weekend, parking is typically free.

Number Seven: Windsnest Park in West Olive, Michigan
Admittedly, I have only been to this location one time, but it was so freaking gorgeous. My first visit here was for a sunrise engagement session (hello two hour drive at 5:00am), but damn - it was so worth it. This beach has views that made me say "are you sure we're still in the Lower Peninsula?"
This location does require you to pay for parking, although, I am unsure on the amount, so just check before you visit!

Number Eight: The Ledges in Grand Ledge, Michigan
Grand Ledge has some of the best locations for unique outdoor photos. The Ledges have two access points (that I know of). One is located within Fitzgerald Park and the second is via a trail connected to the Island Park.
Both access points offer great views and lead to the same place. However, if you enter from the Island Park side - be prepared for quite a walk. While you'll find some gorgeous spots along the way - the best spots (in my opinion) are quite a hike and are better to access from the Fitzgerald Park side.
There is a $3 parking fee at Fitzgerald Park and it is free to park at the Island. Both access points offer beautiful views. Where the Island has a cute gazebo and water access - Fitzgerald park has woodsy trails, a dam, and more. I recommend visiting this location in the Summer or Fall months.

Number Nine: Frances Park Rose Gardens in Lansing, Michigan
Frances Park is a GREAT location for almost any season. During the summer, they have a rose garden that is usually in full bloom and absolutely gorgeous. Additionally, they have an upper terrace/gazebo that has stone steps, vines, and beautiful trees.
The landscaping here is chefs kiss and looks beautiful year round. This location is my go-to for couples local to Lansing that want something outdoors, but formal (in cases where the Capitol is just... too formal). Only downside? It's a very popular park that is often busy, so if you're someone that gets awkward in front of the camera and prefers privacy - this may not be the location for you.

Number Ten: Potter's Mill Artist Lofts in Lansing, Michigan
While this is a building that houses businesses - the whole building is absolutely breathtaking. The Lansing Studio (another great location) is located on the second floor of the Potter's Mill.
This building offers easy access for those wanting: elevator pictures, bar top photos, stunning artwork, unique lighting, and an urban feel. It's an older building that has a LOT of charm.
If you want to take photos here (not within The Lansing Studio), definitely double check to ensure they don't have any events going on. There is usually medium to heavy foot traffic here when an event is taking place.
Michigan's diverse landscapes and hidden gems make it a photographer's paradise -- and the perfect place to celebrate your engagement. Each of these locations offers a unique vibe, so you can pick the one (or two!) that feels like you. Pair your favorite spot with a talented photographer, and you'll have memories to cherish long after the "I do's." Where will your love story unfold?
